A wonderful and beautifully decorated Japanese Shibayama-style cabinet. The front proudly displays various shelves and compartments at various levels, with highly inlaid and carved scrolling of floral blossom and dragon designs. Inlaid plaques on the doors and drawers feature children playing along with birds and flowers, and crested by a large phoenix ornament. This black lacquered Meiji period cabinet dates to the late 19th century, with a stepped centre above two sliding doors. Each door is overlaid with carved bone designs, depicting birds and flowers, and two larger conforming doors to each side. Above, there sits an arrangement of shelves, each with lacquered rear panels. Carved and pierced panels rest below and the lower section features an arrangement of cupboards and drawers. This well-decorated area depicts flowers and birds in relief, against dark lacquer and on a pleasing carved and pierced scroll base.
